<CODE for CHANGE>
{‘Connecting Dreams to Reality’}
-
This project is focused on bringing coding and digital education and exposure to children in communities who do not have access to it.
During the exposure period, children get the opportunity to explore their gift for coding and building a digital world. Those who show interest and promise are identified and enrolled to further their education in coding.
This project provides an education path that leads children on a career path that was previously inaccessible to them.
-
The project is run in partnership with Garden Route Innovation & Technology HUB and Coder Dojo. They are the subject experts, providing the coding curriculum and facilitating the classes.
The coding classes are preplanned lessons that the children can follow under the supervision of the subject expert. The lessons are based on a play-and-learn concept. This means that the coding lessons help the children build a game and if the game is functional it proves that their code is correct. The next level is to build a robot and code it to fulfill tasks.
Therefore, the reward is even sweeter in that they can enjoy the fruit of their labour.
-
Each student requires a workstation and internet connection to ensure they do the work and receive credit for the working code they write.
Students cannot share a computer because the lessons require the students to reason and solve the coding problem by themselves.
For each mobile workstation with an internet connection in this project, we can educate a child at a location in their community.
-
The long-term goal is to transfer business and entrepreneurial skills to these students through starting and running a small business as a project.
Those who code need to partner up with those who create content and the producers of products to start and run a business.
These skills will allow the coders to create a digital shop for sales, and in partnership with the content creators, they will have a digital representation of the goods to be sold. This then only requires marketing and distribution to reach the customer.
This will force them to think like business owners who take responsibility rather than employees who just take orders and collect a paycheck.
The Project in Action!
We are at the Power Town aftercare center where the coding project has been doing exceptionally well. These students are for the first time handling a computer and learning how to code. Over the past few months, they have excelled well above expectations proving that when given the opportunity they have the gift to forge a career in the digital marketplace.
